XP pro to XP pro full install

I have XP pro on my laptop, but microsoft says it is not valid. I have a
full OEM install disk and key. Can I install the a full pro version over the
current XP pro version? When I tried I got a two operating systems warning,
then I tried to uninstall my XP SP2 version and tried again. That did not
work, I still saw two operating systems, the original and the update, and I
finally went back to a system restore point, so I am at least working now.
Can I just change the key or call microsoft?
