XP pro, problem launching explorer, IE, control panel, etc.

This is very strange. Been running for over a year with
no issues; I'm not aware of any recent driver updates,
application installs, etc. Does anyone have suggestions?

Symptoms (regular startup):
IE will not launch (hour glass for a short time,
process appears in task mgr, but then disappears
with no display).
My Computer, Control Panel, Windows Explorer,
"start/run repair":
Selecting any of these options results in the desktop
disappearing (all icons and the start bar) for 10
seconds or so then reappearing without launching
the selected program.
Netscape, Help and Support, Office products, etc. all
startup ok.

Symptoms (boot with basevideo - to eliminate the graphics
driver as the issue):
Same problem set as above.

Symptoms, safe mode w/ networking boot:
No issues at all, IE, Windows Explorer, Control Panel,
etc. all startup.

What do the root Windows apps (Win Explorer, IE, Control
Panel, My Computer, etc.) have in common that may cause
them to be affected in this way?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Wahoo!

Post a question, find an answer...too bad it is always in
that order.

I saw a post about ad-aware. I downloaded and ran it.
First time flagged 8 objects, I quarantined them and
rebooted...same problem.

I selected "update" in adaware. After receiving the updates
29 objects were flagged and quarantined. BAM...my system
is back to normal. Wahoo!

Hope it works for you too. I'm still curious to know what
dll or registry flag was causing the MS core navigation
executables to flake out.

Try downloading, updating and running AdAware from
<http://www.lavasoftusa.com>. Some adware/spyware programs can cause
this problem.

Also, make sure you have the latest virus signatures (you DO have an
antivirus program, don't you?), and scan your system.

After you have solved your problem(s), turn on the XP firewall (ICF), or
install a personal hardware or software firewall.
