Can't Remove IE

R

Rogers

Got a mess here I think.

I am running XP SP3. I had Internet Explorer 8 and Firefox 18 both
active, Suddenly, today, IE began hanging up horrendously - like it
took several minutes just to start up from its desktop icon.

Because I have read that IE8 and net framework have problems, I
downloaded and used net.framework cleanup utility to remove net
framework 2.0 and 3.0 from my machine as verified by Control Panel.
I further manually removed IE8 in Control Panel. They all should now
be gone.

Now when I click on the still-remaining (!) desktop IE icon it takes
forever to open, and when it does, it is IE6 (from whence unknown,
unless it came with XP). I have not found a way to remove IE6, nor
can I reinstall it because it says I have a later version on the
system, which I do not. This seems to make no sense.

Grateful for any assistance here.

I can help you.

I.E. 6.0 is part of and built into Windows XP.

Like yourself, I tried newer versions, but they were misbehaved "abominations".

I.E.6.0 is small and runs good enough to still download updates.

I would reinstall I.E. 6.0 using Add/Remove Windows components.

Do you use a disk imaging program or Erunt ?

Good luck,
Andy

That's just it! Control Panel>Add/Remove programs does not show IE of
any version-level. At least I don't see it. That seems incorrect
too. And when I go ahead and try an install of IE6, it says it cannot
because A LATER VERSION IS PRESENT. Wanna bet? :<)

IE6 is present under Program Files.

Is Acronis True Image what you have in mind? I have that. If not,
tell me another program name or two please. I have never used Erunt.
Can I download it? Free?

Thanks

Just ignore those who don't admit mistakes and makes things worse and then blame others.

I would recommend using Revo Uninstall, it's free.

It removes leftover files, registry entries, that some programs leave behindafter their uninstall.

I would not recommend Level 4. Level 3 is fine.

Erunt is also free.

Debunking the myths about MASM

1. MASM is no longer supported or upgraded by Microsoft.
Nobody has told this to Microsoft who supply ML.EXE 9.0 in the Win7 DDK. Ithas been a component of the Microsoft Visual C/Studios commercial development environment since it was made available as a processor pack in 2000 forVC98. It is upgraded on a needs basic by Microsoft noting that it has beenin constant development since 1981 and does not need much done to it apartfrom the occasional upgrade to reflect operating system and hardware changes. It is well known that Microsoft use MASM to write critical parts of their own operating systems.

Do NOT follow Andy's suggestions. Based upon his own problems he has
posted about, and he can't get a hande on fixing them or working in a
News Group, he's not your best bet for assistance here.

There is NO reason to "uninstall" IE8. Too many OS sub-components
use IE's HTML rendering and its contraindicated to use IE6. If you
have problems with IE or misgivings about IE just make FireFox the
"default" Browser and don't use IE.

If you had problems with IE8, downgrading IE8 to IE6 was NOT the
right thing to do. The right thing to do would have been is to
correct any problems with IE8 and just stopped using it with the
preference of FireFox. The problems with IE8 could have been malware
related, a problematic Browser Helper Object (BHO) or too many BHO's
conflicting with each other. Downgrading from IE to IE6 may have
actually exacerbated the problem.
I would strong suggest removing any/all IE Toolbars and associated
BHOs then allowing Windows Update to bring IE6 to IE8 and then check
the functionality of IE8 then make sure FireFox is the default
Browser and ONLY using FireFox.

Whoa! First off, Firefox has never been so hot to begin with! And
nowadays it has been losing favor with the masses. Firefox was never
very useful without addons. But addons causes Firefox to become unstable
and sluggish. So it isn't very good in any case.

Chrome has overtaken Firefox among many users. Although I don't like
Chrome or Google anything for that matter. But Maxthon v3 also uses the
same rendering engine as Chrome (Webkit), so that is the one I prefer.
As a bonus, Maxthon v3 also can use IE's engine too. So you can toggle
between the two on the fly with the same browser.

I am also not a big fan of the newer IE versions. Yes, I use v9 and v10
too on my Windows 7 and Windows 8 machines. While I have 30+ computers
here, I believe this is the only XP machine I have with IE8 installed on
it. I tried it with some other XP machines and I don't really like it.
And I can't get by with v6 for browsing anymore (seems like nobody
supports it). So I generally prefer IE v7 if I can get away with it.

It seems like it is okay to uninstall IE7 or IE8 from XP if you just
upgraded. But if you later do updates and some program installs, then
uninstalling IE7/8 later may screw up your OS. I generally use an
archived backup that didn't have the newer IE that I want to get rid of.
If this isn't an option, I think I would reinstall XP from scratch.

FireFox is what the OP already said he used and it very good and then there
is always Opera. However Google Chrome is nothing more than Google's data
mining front-end application. Simply put, don't trust Google with your data
or privacy.
Example:
http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/08/24/google-reaches-500-million-settlement-with-government/

The reason why Google Chrome has a large installation base is because Google
Chrome (like Google Toolbar) is foisted upon the unintiated user via
installations of other, non-realated, software and being promoted via
Google's search engine. None of the other Browser's authors go to such
lengths to get their software on your computer. It just so happens that
Opera has the LEAST amount of vulnerabilities that have been found in any of
the Browsers and Google the most.

(OP)
Did I say that? Didn't mean to.
Actually I had Firefox18 and IE8 installed when all went to Hell.
My Firefox still works, but every so often it goes South too. The
addons seem to kill it.

Not that I have noticed so far. If it comes down to it, I will
restore from a month-old image backup to see how that goes. After
saving off any data new since that backup of course.
I will try Revo and Erunt next

Revo seems to pretty well match what I see in ControlPanel>Add/Remove

surprisingly, IE 6 and/or 8 are not shown. Can't remove 'em with Revo
I'm thinnking.

It's not in the normal list of prog.s (at least it isn't on this

Programs window labelled Add/Remove Windows Components, you'll find it.
Mind, on mine it says "Adds or removes access to Internet Explorer from

rather than it itself, that it controls.

Yes, though I'm not sure it'll help you; it is, basically, a variation
on restore points: it saves several files, including the registry. (And
in a way that won't expire.) It won't help you go back to before you
start using it; it also won't help you boot if Windows won't, though if
you can get something else to boot, it may well run under that to help
you restore. (When I asked Lars what he recommended, he recommended
BartPE, which does work, and ERUNT's restore utility _does_ run under
that.)

Everyone's MMV. I find Firefox tolerable, and less prone to lock up the
OS than IE. Others have different experiences. (I grant Firefox may be
slow to _start_ - I've not really noticed; I leave it running once I've
opened it. It's not _that_ slow to boot, come to think about it, as I
recently installed/upgraded plugins/addons that requested a Firefox
restart, and I wasn't aware of a long delay.)

Are you sure IE 8 is still there partially ?

If you can't find the directories for it, it may be gone as far as it's files are concerned.

You may still have registry entries.

I would do a file search.

iex*.*

IF, all remnants of 8.0 are gone, then I would reinstall I.E. 6.0.

In Win 98, a talented programmer wrote a program that "excised" I.E.
from the O.S

I'd be interested in seeing the European version of XP. :)

Outta here.

All that is removed via Add/Remove Windows Components are the shortcuts
to IE in the menu and the desktop. No files or functionality is
removed.

ERUNT isn't likely to be useful in this situation because it only backs
up the Registry files for system and user. It doesn't back up any other
files, and playing with IE installations will be changing a large number
of other files... not only IE program files but Windows shell files and
more. It is much more limited than system restore.

The OP is unfortunately ignoring the comments of most of the responders
except Andy.... and Andy's suggestions thus far are likely to make his
issues worse.

The machine I am using for this post has ie8 and all
the .nets including 3.5 and it runs great.
I don't quite understand why you want to remove everything.
Odds are either your hdd is going bad or you have malware/virus,
or some file got corrupted. IE6 is integrated into xp.
Run a surface scan, Malware bytes, and a linux virus scanner cd.
Its possible that the o/s is now so messed up that you will
have to start from scratch with "ffff/disk".
