XP not recognizing USB mass storage, error code 28

I recently did a fresh install of XP, installed all of the updates and
motherboard updates. When I plugged in my MP3 player it won't recognize it
now as a USB mass storage device. It shows the device on the USB tree
directory as wierd characters and it won't find, or allow the USB driver to
be updated to the USB mass storage device. It comes up as error code 28. I
haven't had any problems using it on other computers.

I've tried updating all of the drivers, and even selecting the same drivers
that work correctly on a different computer. The error message I receive is
"the data is invalid".
