XP No Longer Boots

Windows XP Home SP1 on an HP Pavilian xt155
laptop no longer boots. It gets to the 2nd
XP logo screen and then stops. The mouse still
moves.

I've tried pressing F8 at boot and doing a Safe
Mode boot, but it still stops at the same point.
I've got a bunch of System Recovery CD provided
by HP, but I don't want to wipe out my installed
programs unless I have no other choice. I don't
see an actual Windows XP Home install CD. Anything
I can do to try to repair the XP install? Thanks.

Sounds like you may have encountered a virus on your boot
disk which stops it from booting up.

I had the same problem and had to use the restore disk,
but every time I went on the net I got the virus again so
I had to have the windows xp service pack 1 and the
latest virus definitions updated on to a CD rom so I
could install before surfing again.
