XP Locking up when using a modem

I setup a modem in XP to connect to a local ISP. It dials, goes through the
connection handshaking, but shortly
after this before I can do anything, XP Pro locks up solid requiring a
poweroff to get things back.

I've tried two different modem brands , last one being a USR modem that says
it works with XP and I verified
it had all the latest drivers/firmware installed. Since the same thing
happens with two different brands, I doubt it
is a modem issue.

I check in XP and no conflicts are reported by any device, and the modem
passes the little test XP performs.
I tried different IRQ's for the modem, same result. So I'm thinking it is
something with XP.

I have all the latest patches applied, so not sure what to check next.
Thoughts and suggestions?

TIA

Yup, even created a modem log file, neither was showing anything strange or
that would
even hint at the problem.

I had a exactly the same symtoms with an XP client on my
network and it turned out to be a conflict between a
Lucent VPN client our company uses and iPass for remote
internet dial in. Check if remote desktop is being used
in some way. Basically check for any piece of software on
the machine that may use the modem or expect to
encrypt/control non local network connections.

This is probably not your problem but I can tell you it
took ages for me to work out!

Brian

Ahhhh, I have the Lucent VPN client installed. So shutdown/disable the
Lucent services should
probably work when trying to use the modem?
