Laptop internal modem 633 error

I am really desperate to solve a modem problem which as occurred today. I am
off on holiday tomorrow so I unplugged the ADSL lead and connected the old
56K phone line but the modem won't dial.

I have an old Time laptop (model 8375) and it runs under Windows XP Home
with SP2 installed. The internal modem is a VIA (Conexant) (AC '97)

I went into device manager and saw the yellow circle with a '!' in it. I
went to the Conexant website and downloaded the latest HSFac97 modem drivers
and installed them.

I went into device manager and the modem appears without any errors but when
I try to connect to a dial-up I get the dreaded error 633. I uninstalled
the modem and re-installed using the new drivers. According to Device
Manager the item is working properly. I checked for conflicts but
(Resources) the modem is on IRQ 05 and the report is 'No conflicts'.

However when (in diagnostics) I 'Query Modem' I am told that the 'The port
that the modem is attached could not be opened. This may be the result of a
hardware conflict. Check the device manager to verify all devices are
functional."

I have looked around on the web and one page suggested I went to the Port in
Device manager to make sure the modem port was enabled but when I go to
Ports the only one listed is the printer.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for this but I have a feeling this only works for Windows 98 and
Millennium (according to the document).

I don't have a file called telephon.ini on my system and when I type
tapiini.exe in the run box the file isn't found.

I could change the ProviderFilename0 value but I am worried that it might
cause my system to grind to a halt - do you think it is safe to try?

Thanks,

Noel

Hi Noel,

I agree to your concern as a registry key is senstive information. I would
suggest you to take a backup of the registry key before you try the step.

For taking backup

1. Navigate to the key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\
Telephony\Providers
2. Right click the Providers key

This will open My Documents

3. Save the file as providers.reg

Once saved you can change the value as per the KB Article.

In case you need to revert to the previous value, you can go to My Documents
and double click providers.reg to restore settings.

Hi Jitesh,

Thanks - I did that without any problems but I get a different error now!

797 "A connection to the remote computer could not be made because the modem
was not found or was busy".

I noted that my modem seems to be allocated to COM7 but I am not sure that
the port is open, not do I know how to check whether it is assigned to the
modem.

Thanks,

Noel
