XP hangs on shutdown w/ethernet

Hi all,
I need some advise/help with the following. For months now I can't seem to
find an article or fix for my hanging shutdown problem. I am running XP Pro
with all the latest SP, and security fixes. When connecting via Ethernet to
my home office (pier to pier) my pc will not shut down. It goes through the
shut down steps and then hangs when it gets to "windows is shutting down".
When I take home my laptop and do not have it connected any Ethernet
connection, it will shut down normally.

I used to be on another network with this machine and it started happening
at that office. I deleted any and all connections with the old network, and
it still hangs when I am connected to my network.

I have tried some of the more obvious fixes I found in the KB and none of
them solved my problem:

Did you install the ethernet card from another machine to current,
you might have a hardware conflict with the card.

Just curious. What type of business do you engage in. I want to make sure I
never call upon you. Pier to pier concerns ships and boats. Peer to peer
concerns computer networking!

Scott,

I am a retired CNE and am having a similar problem with a Dell Latitude CPx J, although in my case the problem is ocurring on Restart and Shutdown. This was a referb machine: clean drive, I installed XP Pro, and problem happened from time of install and proior to installing the 3Com Lan and Zoom Modem card. My confusion is compounded because I have a couple of these CPx's with same OS and no problems.

In 98 OS this would have been a RegEdit issue and easily fixed. Not so in XP. I have been pulling my hair out for the last couple of days trying to figure out the problem, exasperated by the so called support at Dell

I will keep searching and if I find a fix I will update you. Hope you will do the same

Thanks Dave, I'll keep you posted as well. My problem has been on-going for
about 6 months. More of an annoyance than anything else, but would like to
get to the bottom of it.
