I have a cable modem that can connect to a computer with USB or
ethernet. When I first set this computer up, ethernet seemed to cause
some problems, so I just used USB. Everything worked fine.
Fast forward a year.
I wanted to connect a router to the modem, so I had to switch to an
ethernet connection. Now when I plugged a cable into the onboard
ethernet, the computer instantly shut down. I thought is was an
electrical short or something. So I got a PCI NIC, and installed that.
It was properly recognized, and when I plugged in a cable, the computer
didn't instantly shut down. The modem was off and the router was on.
The computer then began to accquire a network address and failed. So I
turned on the modem. Alas, the computer got a stop error (0x7E). This
is repeatable. Oddly enough, the onboard NIC didn't need to be
connected to the internet to fail; the other end of the cord could just
be hanging loose.
I don't really want to "test" with the onboard NIC too much, as I have
a visceral dislike of seeing my computer instantly die. Anyway, now I'm
thinking I have a driver problem instead of an electrical short. The
device manager shows all devices as working properly. I have the dumps
if anyone wants to take a look. In fact, I think every dump in the
minidump directory is the same problem. I have checked
http://aumha.org/win5/kbestop.php#0x7e without result, and the MSDN
page is down.
Any ideas?
