Why did XP finf wrong driver while recognizing ethernet?

Hi,
I wasn't keen on networking in XP and i had NOT any kind of problem
under Windows 2000 with same hardware but i decided to upgrade XP SP2
Pro.

The problems has begun with installing XP rather than 2k, my Surecom
EP-320X-S ethernet NIC was recognized as "Asound 10/100M Based Fast
Ethernet Card" resulted a lot problems that i don't want you to make
confused by counting all. Maybe my ethernet chipset is based on that
card but it's not sufficent so i changed to original Surecom driver
MANUALLY.

My ethernet adapter is Surecom EP-320X-S and i've updated driver to
2.74 from 2.60.

Then after several next boot-ups my computer started to freeze at
Welcome screen and display has gone away but after i unplug cable the
computer worked again.

However now, although my connection is fine, i can browse sites and
the cable is NOT faulty, after boot-up with the cable is plugged, the
taskbar icon says "Network cable is unplugged" but i can browse.

How to get rid of it?

Very thanks.

Which is actually pretty reliable.

Did you check hardware compatibility first?

What's not suffcient? Not sure what you mean by that.
so i changed to original Surecom driver
MANUALLY.

In other words, there is some confusion as to what the card is, and what the
correct driver really is.

Which would indicate a problem located at the adapter or driver.

Workng with Windows 2000 does not automatcially mean that the card will work
properly with XP.

Some suggestions here may help:

Have you considered replacing the network card? They are inexpensive, and
aren't all the same. I think I pay maybe $12.

For example, I have a couple of systems that I had to give fixed IP
addresses to. The built-in gigabit NIC's fail silently when this is done -
No error message, but there is no data traffic - but the NICs work
perfectly with DHCP. And perhaps interestingly, they won't take the
fixed IP address under XP, Server 2003, or Linux.

I've had to add a PCI network card to use the fixed IP address, and that
works everywhere.
