Computer will not shutdown.

My computer, which runs Windows XP Home edition and has service pack 2
installed, won't shut down. When I go to the start menu and select shut
down, it hangs up and will stay that way indefinitely. I need to use
control/alt/delete and the task manager to shut down my computer. Anyone
know what's wrong to prevent the computer from shutting down normally?
