shutdown stopped by application that refuses to end

Hello,

We recently began testing with an application that runs in the
background of our laptops. On startup, this app starts just fine and
connects the way it should. When we attempt a start>shut down, we can
see in the system tray that windows begins to kill all open tasks and
apps, but this one particular app hangs, and refuses to close. The
only way to shut down is to alt+ctrl+del and end the task, and then
the computer will shut down properly.

Is there a program or a setting that can be enabled to kill this task
on shutdown no matter what it's status is? I have tried other programs
that force shutdowns. They work, but they ask the user to click
somewhere else or assign a hotkey to shut down. Our users are stubborn
and there are hundreds of them, so we want a method that will let them
continue to use start>shutdown.

Thank you,

Bret

A shortcut to the app is placed in the startup folder to execute on
startup. But it really doesnt matter, we can execute it from the start
menu, or from program files, or it's home directory if we wanted to.
The result is the same, computer will not shut down.

The application itself has to be investigated as to why windows cannot shut
it down.

Go to whoever makes the application: surely if they design it to run it
in the background, they must have a clean way to close it.

The big problem is that you are told that alphabetsoup.exe is
running and you've got to find it!
