XP Shutdown problem

I am running Windows XP Home Edition with SP2. Recently a minor problem has
developed. When I select Shut down the computer goes through the shut down
process but does not power down the computer. Instead, it reboots acting like
I selected Restart instead of Shut down. I suspect a Registry value has
changed. Would appreciate it if someone could help me resolve this problem.
Is there an article in Knowledge Base that addresses this issue? I couldn't
seem to find one but I may have asked the wrong question in the search.
Please respond to (e-mail address removed) Thanks.

I am also running Windows XP Pro & having shutdown problems as well as loss
of sound from speakers/headphones. I tried system restore, but I still have
to shutdown by holding down the start-up button.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Turns out, after much thrashing, that mine was a hardware problem. The IDE
cable on the secondary IDE bus was partially unplugged. Pushed it in and the
computer shut down properly. Case closed! Thanks for your reply.
