Windows XP shutdown problem

My windows XP - SP2 has suddenly developed a shutdown problem. Now, when I
go to Start, Shut down the computer and click on Shut Down now. Nothing
happens. However, if I repeat this action, the computer shutsdown quickly
on the second try. Has anyone experienced or has a solution for this
problem? TIA. Jef

Thanks, Jamie for your reply. I run a weekly virus check, and just ran one
after I received your message. I'm told that there are no viruses, so it
must not be that. Jef

Have you got Skype installed ? there have been a few queries about that
this week .

Thanks to all who replied. I solved my problem of requiring two tries to
shut down the computer. I was using a Sony DaVinci screen saver. That was
the culprit. I selected one of the generic Microsoft Windows screen savers,
and the shutdown problem was solved. Jef
