Windows XP won't shutdown

Bernie Kilshaw

Hi,

I'm running Windows XP (SP2) and recently I'm not able to get the system to
completely shut down.

When I select shutdown it goes through the normal processes until the
message "Windows is shutting down.." then hangs. I've waited up to two hours
to see if it would complete but the only option I have is to power it off.

Nothing obvious in the event logs.

Any ideas?

TIA,

Bernie

Will,

thanks for the link.

Turns out it was related to Windows Update - the Auto Update service
wouldn't shut down - I've had an ongoing problem with that since I rebuilt
the machine.

Updates stopped working after I'd applied a series of patches so I gave up
on it; using HfNetChk to do a scan

Thanks

Bernie
