Laptop Shutdown Problems

Hi,
My mom's laptop has been giving her trouble lately. When she shutsdown
it hangs at "Windows is Shutting Down" I must hold the power key for a
few seconds to manually shutdown. This is more of a nuisance than a
problem because she is not losing work but her computer stays on all
day. I normally would attempt to fix it but I do not know where to
begin because I have never heard of this. A week ago I accidentally
downloaded Spyware. I removed it with Windows Defender and checked with
Trend Micro but that could have something to do with it.
Please Help!

Windows XP
Dell Inspiron B130
1GB of RAM
No usb devices.
Internal Network Card (primary source for Internet)
APM set to Portable/Laptop
HP Networked Printer
No Problem Devices in Device Manager
Laptop cooler (runs off usb port)

Try to uninstall the Windows defender and reinstall the New release from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...E7-DA2B-4A6A-AFA4-F7F14E605A0D&displaylang=en
Note : When you try to install Defender Disable the Anti-Virus if you have
one for the installation to be successful.
If you still have trouble with turning OFF the Laptop, then look in the
Event Viewer for Error messages.
To access the Event Viewer do this:
Open a run command and type in:
eventvwr.msc click [OK].
There click on each of these folders to see the Log report in the Right
pane/window, then double click any error message to get more Info about the
cause of it or what causing it.
You can Copy and Paste in your next message.
To turn the Laptop try to do this if it hangs; Press ALT+CTRL+DEL and click
Shut Down.
HTH.
Let us know.

thought of that. I will post back later tonight.

My Mom said her computer has suddelny been shutting down fine so I am
gonna just leave it alone until it happens. All I can remember doing is
booting into safe mode to see if that helped and ever since then It is
fine. If it acts up I will let you know

Thanks for the Feedback and keep an eye and tell Her to back up her Data
just in case of any sudden crash.
Good luck.
