Due to Service pack 2 problems, I uninstalled and then ran
a repair with XP in the boot up drive. I went to the
second Repair screen, followed directions and XP
restarted. In the set up screen, device drivers loaded
about 60%, and then it crashes. First there was an error
message/warning about the mouse software with options to
load or not load. Either choice caused a crash. I
disconnected the mouse, and now XP still crashes at the
same point, without a warning or error message first. I
cannot bootup in SAFE MODE, Recover to a previous
configuration and every option chosen after hitting F8
brings me back to the same XP SET-UP screen where it
crashes as above. I'm lost.

Depending on what type of CD you own, I hope you have the option to boot to
"Recovery Console"...
Try booting to the WinXP CD and read all the options to see if you're given
the option to push "R" for a repair, and then the next screen will hopefully
give you the choice of the Recovery Console or a Repair Installation. Choose
"C" for Recovery Console.
If you get to the command prompt, you're ready for the SFC command that will
force a reinstall of all Windows components to the exact versions on the CD.
(I've had to use this about a dozen times and it has always worked.) Type
this:
SFC /scannow
It should ask for the Windows source files. Point it to your CD drive.
I hope this works for you. It is still concieveable that your problem may
not get fixed by this but it is the most powerful repair command I know of.

Does it crash or does it output an error during the install of XP (something
like "failed to install product catalog" and then stop? If you are getting
the failed to install roduct catalog error then see this link
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=823303 I had similar issues when doing a
repair install and had to do this.

Thank you. I got to the c: windows prompt but the
SFC /scannow command would not work. Only the menu of DOS
commands worked.

Try running from Recovery Console:

chkdsk /r
