WXP SP2 - Major boot problem

Hello!

I can't get my copy of WXP SP2 to boot anymore...

Normal startup crashes without BSOD just after the Windows logo has
gone.
Safe mode startup crashes after the list of loaded drivers has gone.
The timing of the crash is identical all the time.

Chances of a virus or network infiltration are not likely. The system
has performed flawlessly untill now.

I used chkdsk numerous times, sometimes with filesystem errors
returned, upon which they were fixed. I'm under the impression that the
filesystem errors result from the crashes themselves. The disk has
performed perfectly untill now.

I used ERD Commander 2005 to disable some drivers that are loaded at
boot time. Nothing has appeared in the event log since the time the
first crash occured. There are no crash logs or dumps available.

My question is:

1. What could cause this error?
2. How can I diagnose this error?

Any suggestions would be very welcome...
Thanks in advance!

Best regards,
Cello

Hi Jose,

Thanks for your reply.

No, in no possible way. In safe mode, the crash occurs right after the
progress inidicator bar has finished. There's a black screen for about
two/three second, immediately followed by a restart.

Using ERD Commander, I disabled Auto Reboot On System Crash by setting:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\CrashControl = 0

Still, this setting does not give me a blue screen or whatsoever. So
how can I possibly diagnose what's wrong?

I used several tools to check the disk surface of the particular hard
drive: it's perfect.

No hardware changes were made.

Any thoughts?

FIXED

After disabling AutoReboot in the registry and booting into safe mode,
the following error appeared:

STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error}
The Windows Logon Process system process teminated unexpectedly with a
status of 0xc0000139 (0x00000000 0x00000000).
The system has been shut down.

Finally, some indication of what causes the error...

I checked many references to this problem, including:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;156669

Previous to the crashes, I installed VCOM Fix-It Utilities 6.0 Pro. A
Dutch forum entry
(http://gathering.tweakers.net/forum/list_messages/1038195) shows a
user experiencing exactly the same problem after having installed this
package.

In his case repairing the installation by using the Windows XP setup
disk resolved the issue.

However, another user mentions the possibility that an invalid
msvcrt.dll had been installed. This brought me to a FAQ entry on
Kaspersky's website
(http://www.kaspersky.com/faq?chapter=170709728&qid=185357097):

===
Description of a problem: after installation of Kaspersky Anti-Virus
5.0 for Windows Workstations versions 5.0.177 - 5.0.225 on a
workstation with the OS Windows XP after restart the PC
,,bluescreens": BSOD STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error} The Windows
Logon Process system terminated .... status of 0xc0000139.

Reason: the error occurs on the operating systems in which protection
of system libraries (DDL) is disabled. Installer of Kaspersky
Anti-Virus for Windows Workstations changes one of the system files
during the installation as a result the WinLogon service cannot load.
===

The solution suggest replacing:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\
asycfilt.dll
atl.dll
comcat.dll
mfc42.dll
msvcp60.dll
msvcrt.dll
oleaut32.dll
olepro32.dll
stdole2.tlb

....with copies of another installation.

I just checked msvcrt.dll: filesize 272.05 kb, created 4/6/2000 8:10:40
pm.
Another installation's msvcrt.dll: filesize 335 kb, created 31/12/2002
14:00:00.

As suggested, I replaced msvcrt.dll with the copy from the other
installation.

Now Windows XP boots without problems!!

Thanks for your help Jose. Appreciate it.

Bye,
cello
