Win XP Pro Crash recovery

Hello: I am running WXP Pro SP2 on a Dell desktop. In the last 2 weeks have
experienced a couple of stability incidents that caused the machine to crash.
Rebooting, and choosing "Start from last good configuration" has solved the
problem. Last night the machine crashed again unattended. I have tried all
the Win restart options: Safe Mode(s), etc.: they hang during the loading of
drivers, etc. The "Last Good Config" gets to the black screen w/ Win Logo
and stops... Then re-booted w/ Win install CD and chose the Recovery option
(ie, the Console, not the ARS disk option). The recovery procedure does not
progress past the msg on the screen bottom: "Examining the 155XXX MB disk 0 @
Id 0 on bus 0 ..." Question: only option left is to re-install the OS or
assume disk failure? Any help much appreciated.

Never assume anything, determine the mfg of your hard drive and download
their diagnostic software and run it to test the hard drive.
