windows crash on startup

Hi All,
I hope someone out there can give me a pointer to why when I boot my
computer from full powerdown I get a message as windows loads saying
that it has recovered from a serious error and that it needs to close.
The message box allows me to send a crash report to Microsoft for
analysis but the returned analysis is of no help whatsover. The reason
for the crash alters fron boot to boot.
I could perhaps understand that there is something wrong if this crash
happened all the time.
When I do a soft restart I get no errors at all, it loads into windows
normally without any crashes.
I am running Xp Pro w/ sp2 and all updates for mobo, sound, video etc
and there is as far as I know no malware spyware or viruses present as
I scan regularly.
Thanks in anticipation,
Tony
