Winxpsp2 - Error %Mft

C

cggroucho

Since installing Win XP SP2 the following error message appears in the
system tray:

The file or directory C:/$Mft is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the
Chkdsk utility.

Running Chkdsk finds no errors. I cannot see any problems in the running of
WinXP.

Any ideas on how to remove the error message would be gratefully received.

Many thanks in advance

$MFT = Master File Table, is an index (numerical) of every file on the
NTFS volume. This is a serious warning. An NTFS volume has a flag
called "Dirty", which means the drive/partition has error(s) which should
be corrected by Chkdsk with a repair qualifier ( /F or /R).
One word of caution - Sometimes a Chkdsk with repair can modify the
contents of the drive to fix the errors. This can sometimes mean the data
will no longer be accessible. Be sure to backup your irreplaceable files &
folders before running Chkdsk /R. A Chkdsk session with /R or /F must
be run outside of the Windows GUI to gain exclusive access to the drive
and it's contents.
Click Start, Run (Type) Chkdsk C: /R [Press Enter] / answer Y to do at
the next boot - Reboot PC.
