Installation of XP SP2 downloaded from MSN

I downloaded SP2 for XP from the MS website. While it was installing ,
Norton anit-virus detected a trojan horse. After SP2 finished and rebooted,
the following error appears when the file system is accessed:
"Windows - Corrupt File
The file or directory C:\$MFT is corrupt and unreadable. Please run the
chkdsk utility."

Also, the paging file is gone and the system will not allow a new one. I
have run chkdsk many times - in safe mode and in Windows debug mode. The
error message reappears. What can I do to restore the MFT and how did a
virus attach itself to the download?

Hi Phil,

Had you read the "before installing SP2..."? If not, do so now:

Doesn't sound like a very good anti-virus program if it detected it and
STILL let it THROUGH...

My condolences... that stuff sucks..

Most likely it was a false positive, AV is usually best disabled during
updates for just that reason.
In this case the AV removed something essential.

Another possibility was an ineffective firewall.

Still, several updates processes states to "turn off anti-virus" utilities
before installing the update.

I am surprised that Microsoft's SP2 download triggered a "Trojan" warning.
