$MFT corruption

I tried to download and install XP sp2 and got this error message - "$MFT
corupt and unreadable. Run CHKdsk." I ran Chkdisk and problem persists. Is
there a way to fix this without reformatting.

Your hard drive is probably failing. Get a diagnostic utility from the
drive mftr.'s website and run a thorough test. If the hard drive has
errors, replace it.

Sorry, but that's not at all correct. There is *no* Scandisk in
Windows XP. Chkdsk is the XP equivalent of Scandisk in Windows
9X.

Run CHKDSK /F

Omitting the /F does the check but does not fix errors. If the problem
persists backup your files and run CHKDSK /R to check for bad sectors.

To view the log after the disk checks right click My Computer, Manage,
Event Viewer, Application and read the Winlogon entry. If there are bad
sectors then your drive may be failing. I'd test it again using the
manufacturers diagnostics utility. If that shows more bad sectors then
start shopping for a new drive.

Could also have been a corrupt download, similar happened to me with
downloaded SP1 but OK with SP1 taken from a magazine cover disk.
