Chkdsk Failing to Start

G

Guest

Having read several messages, no one appears to have my problem. Today, an
error message regarding C:|$MFT being corrupt popped-up and told me to run
Chkdsk. I have not been able to get Chkdsk to run in either the cmd prompt
or My Computer in either Normal Startup or Diagnostic Startup. Also, I ran
the Western Digital drive diagnostic and there was no errors. Any assistance
is appreciated.

All my files are backed-up. Another point - I have disabled several
"services" to free up space and improve speed. In an indirect manner, these
may contribute to the problem.

Thank you.

I forgot to mention that things have changed again. I no longer get the
C:|$MFT is corrupt message, but I still can not run Chkdsk.

Thank you

What services have you disabled?

How large is your hard disk and how much free space? If partitioned
please provide details for each partition?

Hope this helps.

Gerry,

It is a fairly long list. Are there any services that directly/indirectly
affect chkdsk startup and performance.

Thanks for the information. Another problem has now popped-up: Internet
Explorer History folder is apparently corrupt. At the current rate I may
need to reload XP and go through the "activation process" again. Any random
thoughts on the situation are appreciated.

I would suggest you try cCleaner.
http://www.ccleaner.com/ccdownload.asp
http://www.ccleaner.com/

With any cleaner you need to proceed with caution. I invariably
recommend creating a restore point before using cCleaner.
cCleaner also offers backup before removal.

When using cCleaner think twice before checking before
Autocomplete Form History under Internet Explorer.
You do get a warning but this one has irritating consequences.

I use CCleaner about once a week to help clean-up my files. I have not
checked
Autocomplete Form History under Internet Explorer.

Next, I will try and use the Windows XP repair function, once I learn it.

Thanks

I just tried chkdsk through the Safe Mode command prompt and it said "in use
by another process." Upon returning to the normal mode, I tried again using
My Computer and when I restarted the computer Chkdsk did try to work, but I
got the message: "Cannot open volume for direct access. Checking finished."
So in a manner of speaking, there is some progress. The Microsoft website
mentions this problem in an old note. I am considering reloading SP2, but am
uncertain as to the effects of this, because I have 1 year of updates on top
of my original SP2 loading.

Yes, I am using Safe Mode with the command prompt as the Administrator. I
just tried it again. In the Safe Mode, I entered chkdsk c: /r and I get the
message can not access volume, do you want to run check disk at next startup
(more or less quoted). Reply: Yes. Then shutdown and at startup I get the
message (more or less quoted): NTFS files. Can not open volume for direct
access. Checking finished.

I have now reloaded SP2 twice and tried through the Safe Mode to start the
Chkdsk. I got the same answer. In addition, in the Safe Mode at the command
prompt, I tried sfc /scannow and it would not scan. The message was: Window
File Protection cound not initate scan of protected system files. Error code
0x000006bga.

Can you find the corresponding error in Event Viewer and post a copy?

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Administrative Tools,
Event Viewer. When researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&Product=winxp

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Double click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. This will paste the info from the Event Viewer Error Report
complete with links into the message. Make sure this is the first paste
after exiting from Event Viewer.

I assume you are referring to the System events. I did find the time I
reloaded SP2 and there were 16 Error events after that until I posted my
message. I reviewed the errors and information descriptions and nothing
"jumped-out" at me. Are you looking for a specific event number, because I
can not remember the exact time I tried scanning the disk? However, I can
post all 16 events.

Thanks

Try running chkdsk. Note the time of failure and then look in Event Viewer.

Gerry,

Must be my age, immediately after my last post that came to mind. I ran
chkdsk and it gave me the same message about can not open volume, checking
finished etc. There was no corresponding error event message. Everything
appears to have started ok, except for this error:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7000
Date: 10/28/2006
Time: 6:35:53 PM
User: N/A
Computer: SIDNEY-1
Description:
The hpdj service failed to start due to the following error:
The system cannot find the file specified.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

The hpdj service has something to do with my HP printer.

For the printer error try uninstalling the HP Printer software. If this does
not
eliminate the post details of the printer model.

I would try HD Tune (freeware).
Download and run it and see what it turns up.
http://www.hdtune.com/

Select the Info tabs and place the cursor on C:\ under Drive letter
and then double click the two page icon ( copy to
Clipboard ) and copy into a further message.

Select the Health tab and then double click the two page icon ( copy to
Clipboard ) and copy into a further message.

Also do a full surface scan with HD Tune.

I had one free MS support service request, so I contacted MS. The problem
was ZoneAlarm. It would not permit the volume to be checked. I removed
ZoneAlarm and Chkdsk ran without a problem.

Thanks for your assistance.
