winword.exe,what causes an abnormal runtime termination

Microsoft Word 2002. When using Word a box came up with "Microsoft Visual
C++ Runtime Library" heading. Then "Runtime Error" against programme
c:\programme File\Microsoft Office\Office10|WINWORD.EXE, followed by
"Abnormal programme termination.
Could somebody explain why and what I can do to ensure this does not reoccur.
