Winsock Provider Catalog

Periodically I am unable to access the internet and get a message that says:
"Windows has detected a problem with the Winsock provider catalog on this
computer. This catalog allows programs to connect with this cmputer across
the network. Would you like Windows to reset the catalog to the default
configuration?" I say yes, then restart the computer and everything is fine
..... until the next time. How can I correct this problem permanently?

Would this result in a permanent "fix" ? Things do seem to run okay for a
while, but then the error comes up again. Come to think of it, I uninstalled
Google Desktop. Maybe I should reinstall it . Do you think that might solve
the issue?

First, try to see which LSP has been added that may be the cause of this
issue. As shown on the page that ColTom2 linked you to, run the
following from a Command Prompt:

netsh winsock show catalog >C:\lsp.txt

The removal of Google Desktop may have damaged the Winsock stack; the
issue the system is experiencing may be due to the presence of malware, etc.

Until you find out which LSPs have been added to Winsock, it's just a
guessing game, Jan.

Do you think if I reinstall Google Desktop the problem will be solved ?

Having received no answer, I tried reinstalling Google Desktop. So, after
running netsh winsock show catalog >C:\lsp.txt at the command prompt,
reinstalling Google Desktop, and telling the error message to reset the
catalog to the default configuration, I'm STILL having the same issue. BTW,
when I did the commond prompt thing I didn't see anything happen. Was I
supposed to ?
