Winsock provider catalog

XP SP2 - 3 browsers not functioning. Diagnostic gives the following message:

"Windows has detected a problem with the Winsock provider catalog on this
computer. This catalog allows programs to communicate with this computer
across the network. Would you like Windows to reset the catalog to the
default configuration? This computer might need to be restarted to restore
network connectivity."

'Yes' to reset default config. Message to restart. Restarted. No change!

Email, IM and Skype are OK. Problem occurred this morning after downloading
Firefox 2.0. Uninstalled it. No change. Ran system restore for 2 days ago. No
change. Virus scan detected no virus. Windows firewall on or off. No
difference!

Expert help will be appreciated!

Am typing this from another computer!

Guess this must be a tough one since no one has yet replied. Here's more:

Ran netsh winsock reset catalog at command prompt and restarted. No change!

Ran netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt at command prompt and restarted. No
change!

What's it apt to take to get the problem solved? Browser access to the
Internet is NIL.
