Problem is with a friend's computer in Romania.

XP SP2 - 3 browsers not functioning. Diagnostic gives the following message:

"Windows has detected a problem with the Winsock provider catalog on this
computer. This catalog allows programs to communicate with this computer
across the network. Would you like Windows to reset the catalog to the
default configuration? This computer might need to be restarted to restore
network connectivity."

'Yes' to reset default config. Message to restart. Restarted. No change!

Email, IM and Skype are OK. Ad-Aware downloads updates. Ran system restore
from 2 days previous. No change. Virus scan detected no virus. Windows
firewall on or off. No difference!

Firewall = Windows XP; anti-virus = AVG Free 7

Received from another source and ran at command prompt the following:

- netsh winsock reset catalog; restarted. No change!

- netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt; restarted. No change!

Browser access to the Internet is NIL.

Ran onboard diagnostic with following results:

Thanks for the info and links. But Zonealarm is not installed on the
computer. Only XP Firewall is in use and it doesn't matter whether it is on
or off. Too, there is NO internet connectivity whatsoever with IE 7, Opera,
and Firefox. The problem seems to be with winsock. Is there anything else
that can be done with that which has not already been tried as indicated in
the first post?

But Did you tried to uninstall the NIC and reinstall it again and set the IP
to Auto or try Static IP to see if that will give connection.
Open the Registry and Delete the winsock2:
[-] HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ControlSet001\Services\Winsock2
Reboot the machine and hopefully the system will create a new winsock.

The problem is with friends' computer in Romania. I have to pass along the
info and wait for a reply. So, if you will, please give me specific
instructions on how to uninstall and reinstall the NIC and set the IP to Auto
or try Static IP. In the meantime, I'll ask them to delete the registry key
and reboot and see what happens. I don't suppose it could be any worse than
it is. Thanks for the suggestions.

Hi Marty,
Right click " My Computer" and click on Hardware Tab then click Device
Manager.
On there Expand the plus [+] to [-] under network Adapters and Uninstall
the NIC which used for the Connection!.

On How to set the Auto IP which should be done before uninstall the NIC, try
this:
Click Start >> Double click Control panel >> Double click Network and
Internet Connections >> Double click Network Connections.
On the Local Area Network connection Right click and select Properties.
On the LAN properties under General click on the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
and click Properties Button.
Check the radio Button for Automatically obtain IP Address and DNS.
-------
Make sure the correct ISP connection is set as Default connection:
Click Start >> Control Panel >> Double click Network and Internet
Connections >> Double click Internet Options.
On the IE properties windows you will see these Taps:
General | Security | Privacy | Content | Connections | Programs |
Advanced.
Click Connection Tab and make sure the right connection set as Default then
click on the LAN Settings Button and make sure there is n't any Proxy

OK! Now I understand. I don't believe there's anything wrong with the NIC.
They are still able to send and receive email, use IM and Skype (VoiP) and
have Ad-Aware download updates, all with that connection. It's just the
Internet from which the browsers will not load pages.

By-the-way, I don't have a Winsock2 in the registry on my computer. In the
entry you gave me, it's just Winsock.

Here's a tech article that addresses the methods to repair a corrupt winsock2:

How to determine and recover from Winsock2 corruption
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811259

If your friend cannot access this page, you could send a copy of it saved as an
MHT file.

BTW, my neighbor had the same issue with his computer and diagnostics indicated
the same problem. The repair of the Winsock2 did not solve the problem, so I
uninstalled IE7 and blocked it from being reinstalled by Windows Update. His
problem was then resolved. Let me know if you want to pursue this method and
I'll provide more details.

Okay. Here's a little more info on the repair procedure. To simplify things, you
can download the Guided Help file to your system and then send them a zip file
containing the 811259.exe file along with a text file containing the following:

----
The exe file is for guided help using Windows XP or Windows 2003.

This will automatically run through the procedures outlined in the
companion tech article.

You must be logged in with Admin rights.

It also has an undo feature. Simply run the guided help again.
---

Here's the info regarding restoring IE6: It assumes that the user is running
Windows XP SP2 with IE7.

First, temporarily disable automatic updates.
Next, download, install and run the IE7 Blocker kit. Use the command prompt
method.
Then, uninstall IE7 using the Add/Remove Programs tool.

IE6 will automatically be reinstalled.

Enable automatic updates again.

Again, it may be easier if you download the blocker kit and send them only what
they'll need, and that is two files (zip them to be safe):

1. IE7Blocker.cmd
2. IE7BlockerHelp.htm

To make the necessary registry changes, simply run the cmd file with the /B
switch from a Command Prompt window.

Here's the link for the kit:

Toolkit to Disable Automatic Delivery of Internet Explorer 7
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...F7-5D44-482B-9DBD-869B4A90159C&displaylang=en

Later on, if and when the Windows Update issues are resolved, the user can
return to IE7 by issuing the blocker cmd file with the /U switch and IE7 will be
reinstalled.

Personally, I prefer IE6 and I'll ride it out to the end.

Thank you very much, David! It'll be on its way to them shortly.

Thanks, David! I'm going to send the Winsock2 info over there, but I'd also
like to have the details about uninstalling IE7 and blocking its
reinstallation. It'll be tomorrow before I know anything as it's past
midnight there now.

Firewall = Windows XP; anti-virus = AVG Free 7

Received from another source and ran at command prompt the following:

- netsh winsock reset catalog; restarted. No change!

- netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt; restarted. No change!

Browser access to the Internet is NIL.

Ran onboard diagnostic with following results:
