winsock error

For about a week now, I am having major problems visiting web sites thru
IE. I am using my laptop (wirelessly connected to router) to visit this
forum..... When I turned on my computer, some sort of virus was on it and AVG
attempted to eliminate it. But it did not. Since then, I cannot visit a web
page. When I run the diagnostic (Diagnostic Connection Problems), the
following explanation is given: Winsock Diagnostic - info - error attempting
to validate the winsock base providers:2....error - not all base service
provider entries could be found in the winsock catalog. A reset is needed...
Network Adapter Diagnostic - everything fine..... HTTP, HTTPS, FTD,
Diagnostic - info - FTP (passive) successfully connected to
ftp.microsoft.com.... info - HTTPS: successfully connected to
ww.microsoft.com....error - could not make an HTTP connection....
So I attempted to reset winsock. I googled the procedure to do this and I
reset the winsock. I was able to surf the web again..... but after about 10
minutes, I was unable to visit web pages again, same error with winsock.....I
reset the winsock, and the same thing happened. Also, I attempted a windows
restore to an earlier date, but it would no let me do it. What can I do now??
Any ideas?? It is particularly strange, because I can connect to the
internet, just not IE to visit web sites. Windows Live Messenger works fine,
as does Yahoo Messenger. Also, Outlook Express is fine. Any suggestions would
be greatly appreciated.

Your system is infected, you need to get rid of the virus/trojan that keeps
infecting the Internet Explorer. Instal Malwarebytes Anti-Malware or A
Squared Free to scan for trojans, and scan with an online antivirus...
Google 'Antivirus Online Scanner', 'Kaspersky Online Scanner' or 'ESET
Online Scanner'

You may also need to reset your TCP/IP with an application, download 'XP
TCPIP Repair' for the job.

During which process/step does it do nothing and how long did you wait?

Ok, I go to the start menu, then programs, then remove it. Your program
starts and a blue wiindow opens. It says: This tool will check your XP/2000
system for files and registry keys belonging to rogue spyware applications
and their installing trojans. Files detected will be removed. Press any key
to continue......I press any key and nothing happens. I wait about 10 minutes
and nothing happens.

The first thing it does is set a restore point. You should see a pop up
asking do you want to set a restore point, did that happen? If you don't
answer yes or no to that prompt it will not continue. Check to make sure the
window is not behind another window.

Also if you want a version that does not set a restore point then email me
and I will send it to you. Use the email link at the bottom of my webpage.

Have tried all the suggestions, ran the malware program (it quarantined 102
problems), did the online scan (nothing found) and did the winsock fix. And
viewing web pages came back, but only for a short while. I am back where I
started, with the same winsock errors.

Run the malware scanner in Safe Mode. Unhide and remove protection from
hidden system files, and make sure the application scans the System Volume
Information folder (or folders, there is one on each partition).. you may
need to configure the folder Security if the scanner can not access it. This
folder is where the System Restore Points are saved and can be infected by
malware that hide there from antimalware scananers and restore themselves
afterwards.

To unhide system files and folders:
Tools\Folder Options\View\mark "Show hiden files and folders" and uncheck
"Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)"

You may have to configure the System Volume Information folder security
permissions for the scanner to access it. To configure permissions:
Tools\Folder Options\View\ uncheck "Use simple file sharing (recommended)".
If your XP is Home Edition, logon in Safe Mode to access the Security tab in
the folder Properties. The only necessary permission setting is to add the
Administrators group in the Security Tab and apply "Full Control" under
Allow.

I ran the malware scanner in safe mode. But I first unhid and removed
protection from my hidden system files. The only problem I had was with the
System Volume Information folder. I could not configure permissions. I went
to tools\folder options\view\, but .........there was nothing that said "use
simple file sharing (recommended) to check or uncheck. Also, in safe mode,
when I accessed the security tab in the folder properties, it seemed like
"full control" under allow was already checked (although grayed out). Also my
System Volume Information folder is transparent (which must mean still
hidden). Anyway, the malware scanner did not detect anything. It must be the
SVI folder, as it is still hidden and the scanner probably cannot see it. I
marked the show hidden files and folders and unchecked the hide protected
operating sysytem files with no problem. But like I said, no malware was
detected in safe mode. This is awful.

Put another NIC in the computer.

If this is a PC with an embedded NIC, disable it in the BIOS and then insert the new NIC.

If this is a notebook, disable it in the BIOS and then insert the new NIC as a PCMCIA card
NIC.

I am going to be honest with you. This is a pc and I have no idea if the NIC
is embedded or not. And I do not know how to disable it in the BIOS.??? All I
know, is that I have a pc that will not connect to web pages and the pc is
connected to a router that connects to my laptop. Laptop has no problems. I
wish I was more computer literate.

If the NIC is embedded, the Ethernet port will protrude through the chassis.

If the NIC is not embedded, then the NIC will be installed in one of the expandable PCI
slots.

What is the make and model of the PC in question ?

| Sorry for taking so long to post. It is a Dell Dimension 8300.

I believe it employs embedded Broadcom GigaBit Ethernet.

You can disable it in the BIOS and install any cheap $10~20 PCI NIC and see if you can
network without a problem.

Scootah -

i just read your post form last month and I have the same exact problem with
the same exact messages. we are very similar becasue i have two desktops one
running XP wired directly to my wireless rounter and the second desktop is
using wireless and vista. the XP machine is the one with the same exact
problem you have referenced... same error codes exaclty... all of a sudden
after 6 months the internet just wont connect. - liek you i have tried to run
a restore point but no matter when i ask it to revert to I get a "restoration
incomplete" i also did some research and was told to try and donwload
service pack 3 which i did.. also was told to use the "winsock XP fix"
program ran that and still nothing at all..

Long story short - Did u get your problem fixed? Im going crazy here and it
sounds like you went thru the exact same thing weeks ago.. HOW did u fix it?
HELP... thanks... hey also if you want to contact direct you can use iam7x6
and thats at yah00.... thanks again...

Have you read all of the above responses? if you have and applied them, you
may also need to Restore the Web Configuration in Control Panel\Internet
Options\Programs tab\Restore Web Configuration bar. Also, if you have used
the TCP/IP Repair utility as recommended (Reset TCP and reboot, next Fix
Winsock and reboot), I would guess the next thing to check is the connection
hardware. I would recommend you test the wireless card switching it with the
one on the Vista PC, that's unless you have tested it already and you are
sure it is not the cause.
