Winsock Catalog

i am able to make an https and ftp connection but not an http connectin.
the issue seems to be that something is blocking port 80 but only after
a period of about 15 minutes, intially vey good and then the connection
slows down to nil and i get the same following error report from the
diagnostic tool:
Last diagnostic run time: 11/15/07 15:00:34 WinSock Diagnostic
WinSock status

info Error attmpting to validate the Winsock base providers: 2
error Not all base service provider entries could be found in the winsock
catalog. A reset is needed.

info FTP (Passive): Successfully connected to ftp.microsoft.com.
warn HTTP: Error 12002 connecting to www.microsoft.com: The operation timed
out
error Could not make an HTTP connection.

i can send and receive mail at any time and i can access an ftp site thru my
browser. i can ping almost any url and the ip gets resolved.
i have tried all the suggestions from various theads but it does not help. i
have installed a port reporter but it is not picking up anything that appears
to be blocking
port 80 after this time period.
i have uninstalled my A-V as well as MS OneCare without success and also
re-installed ie7. i have deleted the winsock reg entries but had to restore
working entries from another computer to get my nic working again. i have
used various winsock and lsp fixes and still the problem exists. i also
re-applied sp2 and the time i was able to access the internet went form 2-5
minutes to about 15 minutes.
is there perhaps another way to reset/delete and recreate the winsock
catalog without using the cmd line? my diagnostics error msg says "not all
base provder enties can be found in the winsock catalog". i had a few vpn
programs installed to test but have uninstalled them. the port reporter keeps
on reporting that my wsus server is not available but i have unistalled this
a long time ago. i run reg mechanic every time time i reboot but this does
not appear to have cleared the wsus server issue. i do not think the wsus has
something to do with it but i am grasping at ANY possibility right now.
any help would be appreciated
Andy

Andy,

When you used the various winsock and lsp fixes, did you use them methodically,
and persistently? Did you run each one, one at a time, then check for changes?
Preferably without running other things like Reg Mechanic at the same time?

If you have an LSP / Winsock problem, running other tools like Reg Mechanic will
only confuse things.

Do you have any idea what you changed, just before the original problem first
started?

Hi Chuck,

Yes I did, ran winsock first, rebooted and checked and then ran lsp fix,
rebooted and checked. I did not run reg mechanic again after using lsp fix
and winsock fix. The lsp fix did not find any problems and winsock jsut says
it has been reset and i must reboot for changes to take affect.
The only thing that was installed that I uninstalled at the time it went
faulty was a few vpn solution programs. It was working fine with the vpn
programs installed and about that time I uninstalled it "stopped" working.
The only other program I instaled at that time was called striate reader (a
progam from my mobile provider for e to view my mobile statement online. I
did not think this would cause a prblem and did not uninstall it.
Unfortunately i tried to remove all the instances of onecare in the registry
and the pc would not boot agin even in safe mode (broke the cardinal rule and
did NOT backup my reg first!). i tried a xp repair and used xp pro with sp2
cd and the installation kept looking for a asms file and would go no further.
there is no asms fil in the sp2 cab nly an asms dir. i am now resorting to
having to reformat and start from scratch. i have taken an image of the disk
and will try and still fix it if i can find the asms file so any further help
will still be appreciated.
it would b nice to know what the problem was!

Andy,

VPN programs frequently come bundled with security components. Any of these
will install into the network stack, and if not removed properly will corrupt
the network stack. This is your problem.

I wouldn't run Reg Mechanic at all. Reg Mechanic, and other "registry cleaners"
generally cause more problems than they solve. If you have problems with the
LSP / Winsock portion of the network, only a specialised LSP / Winsock repair
program will solve your problems.

The repair programs, unfortunately, are "black boxes". You have to try each
program, one after the other. If any one program makes a change, you have to
restart the computer, then continue with the others in sequence, one after the
other.

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/problems-with-lsp-winsock-layer-in.html

Note that the various things that you tried all have different purposes. A
Windows Repair Install generally fixes corrupted executables, ie code. A
registry cleaner removes unnecessary registry entries. The registry is separate
from the code libraries.

LSP / Winsock is part of the network stack, which is code, but the portions of
LSP / Winsock that get corrupted are generally registry entries. LSP / Winsock
is used by malware, by anti-malware, and by various other network processes to
install code into the network stack without having to alter or replace system
code.
