On the opening log-in page - under on of the names - it
reads: 1 UNREAD E-MAIL though all emails have been opened
or deleted in OUTLOOK EXPRESS and HOTMAIL. Anyone have a
fix??

Download and install tweakui for xp and use its repair mail count feature or
use it to turn the mail count off completely.

Or edit the registry and delete the mail accounts you don't want:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\UnreadMail

delete all unread e-mail in hotmail
