Windows XP SP2 problems. Whose fault is it?

I have recently been trying to install Service Pack 2 on my HP Pavilion
t680.uk. This is a well specified machine with ample disk space and
processor power to cope.

SP2 installed ok and most of my programs worked ok after installation
(carried out *exactly* as recommended on the Microsoft and HP websites), but
there were major problems with the system. I lost contact with my control
panel, couldn't open explorer, couldn't open any folders.

To cut a long story short, correspondence and telephone calls to Microsoft
support produced the suggestion that it was an OEM driver problem. Another
long telephone call to HP support, produced mystification, followed by the
suggestion that I uninstall SP2 "as it won't give you any advantages over
your current system because you have ample security installed" (Norton
Internet Security).

It seems that I have reached impasse with each blaming the other. Any
suggestions?
