windows xp installation disk

My hard drive crashed and I need to re-install windows xp. My HP Pavilion
7975 came with XP pre-installed and did not include a backup disk. I called
HP to let them know about my problem but they said that since my computer is
obsolete, they cannot help me since they don't have any system disks
available any longer. They asked me to contact Microsoft to see how they can
help me since I paid for my Windows XP. I do have the key, but I don't know
how to go about contacting Microsoft since I am expected to pay $59 just to
inquire about my problem. Please help. Thanks.

Did not your HP have a hidden partition containing the recovery files?
MS is unlikely to help since its an OEM copy of winxp that is supported by
HP & not MS

If you can find someone with a generic OEM winxp cd, the same version, ie
Home or Pro as yours, you *may* be able to use your key with that

Sunnie, HP usually provides you with a Recovery Disk. It might have
been in the Box as a separate plastic package. If
you have any of that lying around look thru it. If you threw it out
then just invest in a WinXP CD.

If all else fails you could try this place.

What do you mean by the phrase "hard drive crashed"? Is it physically
damaged? If so, you may be able to use a generic OEM XP (Home, I
presume) disc -- if you are able to loacte one -- along with your
product key.

Sorry, I wasn't too specific. My hard drive is actually done for - I have a
technician who tried to revive it but it's gone so that all the files could
not be saved. The files in the partitioned section could not be saved
either. HP hasn't been helpful at all.

Is there a site where I can get a generic OEM XP? Thanks.

Doesn't the technician have a generic OEM XP disc? If not, it would be
best to borrow one from a friend or acquaintance (if possible). If you
are absolutely unable to locate one, you may always purchase one online,
but that's a bit of a shame since you already have a license. There's no
site per se where you can legitimately download this disc, but that
hasn't stopped a lot of folks! If you poked around using search engines
you might locate some torrents, but there's no guarantee that what you
download won't have malware, so this is something I can't recommend.

If you wind up purchasing, have a look at:

That's for XP Home, by the way.
