Ram problems?

B

BoredOfThem

Ok , I have a 6 year old HP pavilion with 256meg installed, I decided to
add an extra gig.
So I first checked with crucial.com for which type would be compatible.

When I did Install my chosen ram all seemed fine it was show up in
the bios settings and there were no problems. XP seemed slightly
faster but no significant increase, though I have heard you only notice
the extra ram on heavy duty applications. Any way to cut a long story
short after about six weeks the comp went into a endless boot cycle
which was only solved by removing the new 1GB module.

I decided to by a new stick of ram from a different shop same config
(ddr 400 pc3200a) this module doesn't make XP suddenly reboot
but does seem to make programs crash, so I took it out and all is fine.
P.S. This new module worked fine 24hours before any problems.

My question is are there any tips or tricks that I could use in
the bios settings or XP configuration that would solve
my ram problems?

Did that, comp works fine for a while but then XP starts
playing up. Could be heat related, running comp with
side panel off. Then again would an extra stick of ram
cause temperature problems?

P.S. The latest Bios update is dated: 12-2003

If you still have the original 256mb RAM installed, remove it and see if the
computer still crashes..

Yes leaving the new 1GB ram on it's own without the original 256mb
still causes XP to become flaky.

What is the computer make and model? What is the motherboard make and
model?

Have you read the motherboard manual?

Is it 'shaky' with just the 256mb stick? Are you sure that memory is your
problem?

Try cleaning out the CPU fan and heatsink assembly..

Your model is HP Pavilion a309 not HP Pavilion 309a , which threw me
for some minutes.

I am surprised that the specification does not mention the motherboard.

Pages 116 and 117 have to notes regarding memory.
http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c00043797.pdf

It says 512 and 1,024 mb memory modules are not compatible with all
models.

There are some telephone number in the next link. Give them a call as
you have already wasted money buying two memory modules that do not
work?

Thanks a lot for finding that piece of info, though I
was convinced the crucial memory scan would
provide me with reliable upgrade info.

I would have expected the same but it's not working. Give Hp a call.

Yes works pretty well considering it's only running on 256mb of ram.

Did that and it looks almost new inside, but still
no luck with the extra ram.

It doesn't like the memory you bought. As Gerry has already said, it may not
like 1gb modules.. Try 2 x 512mb..
