Upgraded RAM but...

Hi

Fairly new at this so please be "kind"

Installed an extra 512 RAM so have 1GB. System tools/system info reports 1GB
but "My Computer" properties reports 448 MB as does "task manager" Does this
mean that XP is only seeing the 448 and how do I fix this (does it ned to be
fixed?). The machine sems to boot faster and some memory hungry programmes
seem to work better

Your thoughts will be appreciated

Hi Jean,

Which version of XP are you running? Windows XP Professional X64 Edition
or another version? What Service Pack Level? Notebook or Desktop Computer?
Matching Memory Sticks or different brands of Memory Sticks.

Hi

Good point!

manufacturers)

Thanks Jerry

Crucial sees 1GB ram (which is cool) but I am still confused as to why XP
reports only 448MB in My Computer/properties and task manager (but reports
1GB in System tools/system info) and whether or not this is important.

Thanks guys

Kenw: CPU-z sees both the ram sticks, identifies 1 of the of them as
manufactured by Hyundai, they appear to have the same specs otherwise.

My challenge still appears to be why XP (in certain areas)only reports on 1
of the sticks - I am not even sure that this is important.

to clarify: the machine seems to boot faster, and appears to be
opening/closing programmes faster - which all point to the possibility that
the ram is "working." It just ain't reporting on it

Hi Jean,
It could be becuase the two RAM stick they are from the same manufacture but
a different density and speed?
Or mismatch in specifications for the two memory!
What Is RAM Density?
http://support.gateway.com/s/tutorials/Tu_851378.shtml

/MAXMEM=
Limits Windows to ignore (not use) physical memory beyond the amount
indicated. The number is interpreted in megabytes. Example: /MAXMEM=32 would
limit the system to using the first 32 MB of physical memory even if more
were present.

Does it list the amount if you opened a run command and typed in:
msinfo32 click [OK]

Hi Nass

to answer your 3rd question first: msinfo reports 1GB - thus my confusion:
properties and task manager report 448 (balance used by dispaly card)

RAM density: I don't know how to answer you (newbie)

That technet article looks interesting but I do not know enough to be able
to use the info (i.e. technet assumes a level of expertise I do not have -
e.g.boot ini?)

I am not sure I understand your reference to slots 1 and 3 as this
antiquated motherboard has only 2 physical slots.....

your thoughts and guidance has been appreciated
