Windows XP Sound Problem

For whatever reason my audio playback is now all
distorted. Much like listening to 78 rpm record on 45 rpm
speed. I am sure it is a driver or codecs issue but
according to my automatic updates & Device Manager I have
no problems. Can someone help me?
