Sound Problem

No sound on my computer. I've gone to Control Panel ... Sound and Audio
Devices ... then to Audio to change the default sound playback device. There
is only one device shown - "modem #0 Line Playback". It will not allow me to
change it to my SoundMax digital audio driver. The SoundMax device is
enabled. Please offer some suggestions to fix the problem.

The sound card may be enabled but if drivers are not present, you will not
get a choice. Go to the manufacturer website for the drivers and then
install them..

I went to the soundmax website and reinstalled the driver, but the problem is
the same. When viewing the sounds and audio devices from the control panel,
there is still only one option for the default sound playback (modem #0 Line
Playback), but under Sound Recording there are two devices showing - the
"SoundMax digital audio driver" and "modem #0 Line Playback". Under System
Properties - hardware - then device manager, I looked in "Sound, Video and
Game Controllers" and there is no longer the item "Microsoft kernel wave
audio mixer"...I don't know if that's part of the problem.

I found the "Microsoft kernel wave audio mixer" (it was hidden) and I
reinstalled it, but there is still no sound. When I try to play a system
sound, an error box pops up and says "Windows cannot play the sound..The
sound card may be in use".
