No Sound

I'm trying to get the sound back on a computer - there is no sound coming
from the speakers. The volume control is gone from all
programs>>accessories>>entertainment.

This is a gateway computer on winXP

Main Circuit Board Intel Corporation D865GLC AAC27501-403

Multimedia:
SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio
Unimodem Half-Duplex Audio Device

in the control panel under Sounds and Audio Devices properties it says No
Audio Device under the Volume tab plus everything is greyed out, and under
the Audio Tab in Sound Playback it has the default device as Modem #1 Line
Playback and there are no others listed in the drop down menu

I checked in the device manager under the sound, video and game controller
section, and there are no ?'s or !'s, everything seems to be fine

I downloaded the latest driver "Audio: ADI 1985
[AUD_ALL32_5.12.1.5240_PV2.EXE] (24347KB) 5.12.1.5240 4/13/2005 Download
Integrated audio driver for Intel® Desktop Boards using AC '97 processing
with the Analog Devices (ADI) codec.
"
and I'm still getting no sound - can anyone suggest on what I can try/do to
get the sound back? thanks

Reboot the computer, hit F2 or Del key when prompted, go to BIOS/integrated
peripherals and check if the sound is turned on. If it is on, try to
reinstall drivers for your sound card (go to manufacturer website and
download for the latest drivers
(http://www.intel.com/design/motherbd/lc/lc_drive.htm).

I had the same problem this week. Everything went at once, HD and
monitor. I bought a new monitor and installed a new HD and
re-installed XP Pro. I lost all sound. I didn't realize it until I
went to load Quicken. If you have ever used Quicken then know you the
distinctive 4 or 5 start up notes. Anyways, I downloaded Belarc at
http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html and ran it. It showed the Mfr
of the MB. I went to the MB site and found the Audio Driver (AC 97),
downloaded it, installed it and I had my audio up and running in
minutes. It is a very frustating problem and I couldn't find a whole
lot of information on the Inet that helped. Hope this works for you.

yeah I have downloaded Belarc, I was told to download #5 on this list -
http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scr...XP+Home+Edition&lang=eng&strOSs=45&submit=Go!

I have done that, everything goes fine until "SoundMAX Install" - "Driver
not found!" Reeboot your system and run this setup again" I run the setup
again, and I get that same error. I found other people having that exact
problem with the download

I have tried updating the driver through the device manager, and I have also
uninstalled the soundcard through the device manager, it installs itself
after I restart. Should I not reboot, then install the driver??

I have also tried the drivers from the gateway site specific from the serial
number on the computer, and i can't get those to work either. not sure what
I'm doing wrong, i have tried everything. Sounds and Audio Devices
properties stays Greyed out, and the Audio Tab just lists Modem #1 Line
Playback, and nothing else.

this is what is listed in the device manager - there is 2 Audio Codecs, is
that normal??

Audio Codecs
Audio Codecs
Legacy Audio Drivers
Legacy Video Capture Devices
SoundMAX Intergrated Digital Audio
Unimodem Half-Dupliex Audio Device
Video Codecs

any other sugguest/help, I'm totally lost with this

Might pop into the BIOS and see if there are any settings that can
have an affect on the sound.

Turning on or off the USB support might work (In the Bios - the OS
loads it's own USB drivers)
