No sound on new XP Computer

Hello:

We just installed a new computer and there is no sound. I'm not very
knowledgable about drivers and such. According to the Windows Hardware
screen I have the following sound components and each are "working properly".
How do I find the problem?

Audio Codecs
Legacy Audio Drivers
Legacy Video Capture Devices
Media Control Devices
SoundMax Integrated Digital Audio
Unimodem Half-Duplex Audio Device
Video Codecs

When I go to the "Sound Area" of the control panel, it says I'm using the
SoundMax. I downloaded a new driver and reinstalled it, but that didn't
correct the problem. Thanks for any suggestions.

P.S., my speakers are located within a Princeton monitor and Yes, it's
plugged in.

Where did my Sounds go?

What kind of computer, model, etc? How did you install XP? Did you install
all the drivers? There should be drivers for the chipset, as well as sound,
video, network, and possibly others.

Is this a new computer or just new to you? Did the sound work at some time
in the past?

plugged in.

Some suggestions:

1. Plug in a cheap set of speakers to see if the Princeton monitor is at
fault.

2. If the cheap set of speakers doesn't give you sound, make sure
nothing is muted by looking at the volume control (little speaker
usually in the Notification Area tray). Also look on the monitor to see
if there is a volume control that is perhaps turned down.

3. I know you said the cable is plugged in, but check to make sure it is
in the correct connector. Usually (although not always) the connector on
the computer is green. The SoundMax is on the motherboard so make sure
you don't have a PCI soundcard and have the plug in the wrong sound
connector.

4. If none of the above works, where did you get the driver? Perhaps it
is the wrong one. See below for driver information:

Never get drivers from Windows Update. Get them from:

1. The device mftr.'s website; OR
2. The motherboard mftr.'s website if hardware is onboard; OR
3. The OEM's website for your specific machine if you have an OEM
computer (HP, Dell, Sony, etc.).

Read the installation instructions on the website where you get the drivers.

To find out what hardware is in your computer:

1. Read any documentation you got when you bought the computer.
2. If the computer is OEM, go to the OEM's website for your specific
model machine and look at the specs (you'll be there to get the drivers
anyway)
3. Download, install and run a free system inventory program like Belarc
Advisor. The older Aida32 is good for this, too.
