Windows Xp running fewer and fewer programs

It all started when my friend let me know her computer had alerted her that
she had accumulated a massive amount of viruses in a few hours while she was
away. But no scans by any virus software revealed any problem, in safe mode
or otherwise. But a more troubling problem was found in the meantime; she no
longer had system restore, evernt viewer, device manager and many other
Windows components- including the windows installation wizard.
I tried sfc /scannow and the repair console. Neither to any avail. I
thought, possibly, a repair install- because she could still log on and
windows still seemed to be present, just not fully.
But my friend refused to allow me to do a repair install, believing, she
never accessed those things I claimed were missing so why should she care.
Then, one by one, her programs stopped working- windows media player,
firefox, antivirus software- all claiming they could not launch because of a
missing component and she should reinstall the application. No luck when she
tried. Eventually she lost her control panel and system information page.
Finally she let me do a repair install...
after the install, it came up fine- but crashed when I tried to check
control panel. BSOD pci.sys error.
I brought it up again, again it worked fine, until it BSOD'd again, only
this time, Irql not less or equal.
I brought it up a third time- it informed me twice that it had recovered
from a serious error. All her data was present, and now she had all her
components. She had to reinstall a few programs that had been incompletely
installed during the brain drain hours of the computer, but otherwise up and
running.
Only her internet - wireless lan- the one thing on her computer that had
never stopped working, now refuses to connect to network it used to
'automatically' detect and connect to. The hardware seems configured
properly, and the driver correct, but ipconfig says that the media is
disconnected. Her card was in properly and does not have an off switch.
????????????
1. What- ballparking- could have caused this?

2. What was with the BSODs after repair install?

3. What's the deal with the LAN?

Oh, and, Please Help, PLEASE HELP, Please help!

Thanks so much-

Windows uses a lot of files (especially DLLs) and if some device/
software is not stable, the DLLs that it is using may not be available
for another Windows application/device. When this occurs and the
application/device driver does not "foresee" an error, Windows does
not know want to do and BSODs.
