when i highlight 2 files of different file type, namely a *.gif and a *.doc
file, windows xp loads the abc.doc file with word and the recognises teh
image file as a word document and attempts to open it with microsoft words as
well, a message in words displays 'cannot find the file xyz.doc' (althoguh
xyz is a *.gif file)

Um, don't do that?

Patient: "Doc, my knee hurts when I twist it backwards."

Doc: "Don't do that. Your knee isn't supposed to go backwards."

Windows is trying to execute the primary program for the first selected file
type, any subsequent objects selected in a batch will also attempt to open
in that same application.

suppose im writing up on a research and decide to open my word document and
some image i have with info concerning the research, kinda naturally to work
faster i would tend to load both files at the same time, windows is supposed
to know which file should be opened by its respective program, btw, this only
happened when i tried a *.gif and a *.doc, the files loaded properly when i
opened an excel spreadhseet and a word document or an access database and a
publisher file.

SO what's the problem now>?
