.gifs open in I.E

R

From a friend...
" When I receive a picture in the .jpg format in an email, it opens in the
default program of Windows Picture and Fax Viewer. When it is in .gif
format, somehow the default got changed to internet explorer.
I want .gif to open with Picture Viewer. I know how to change the program it
opens with, but cannot find where Picture Viewer is located. Any help to
where it is?
I use XP, firefox, and yahoo mail.
Thanks for your help."

My response:
" I don't believe there is an executable path, I think the program is called
up by a .dll file, SO...
Right click a local .gif image( an image on your system) and choose "open
with".
If you don't get that option, press and hold the shift key then right click.
Click "choose program" at the bottom of the dialog box.
Scroll until you find MS Picture viewer and highlight/click it.
Checkmark the box that says "always use the selected program to open this
type of file".
Click "OK"
That will associate MS picture viewer with any .gif you open. "

Then I find out:
"That lets me open up a .gif that I have saved with the right program, but
when I go to open up one that is an attachment to an email, it still wants
to open it with IE.
If the attachment was a .jpg, it works fine, it's just the case with .gif"

Any idea how to resolve this?

Thanks

When you do the "Open With..." thing, it should come up with the sub menu
with a choice of applications.

At least, on my system "Picture and Fax Viewer" is one of the choices, so
assumably, choosing it would reassociate *.gif files with the picture & fax
viewer. Even if I chose "Choose program..." from that sub menu, Picture &
Fax Viewer should be listed.

Perhaps you need to install it (it is a windows component) so you can
install it from Add/Remove programs?

Otherwise, I'm not sure of its location - couldn't find anything in the
usual places eg "Program Files" or "Windows" folders.

However, it should be

It's a dll:

It is present, it is used to open gifs in other situations.
The question here is how to associate picture and fax viewer with opening
image files from yahoo mail.

Any suggestions on how to associate opening these attachments? ( from yahoo
mail)?
