Windows XP logon issues

Hi,

had a problem on a different computer today. Started out with a corrupt
NTFS.sys file, which I fixed by rebuilding windows XP home. Now, when it
comes up to the logon screen, i click on my icon, type in my password and it
says logging in, then immediatly, logging off, then I am back to my logon
screen. It does not seem to matter if I am in safe mode, logging into
different accounts or the admin account.

Can someone help me. I have data on here that I would like to get off.

I did try the suggestion of going into the system32 and copying the
userinit.exe, but I get the error that it cannot find the file.

Thanks

Looks like I got it working by myself.

I know you were all chomping at the bit trying to answer it. I copied the
userinit.exe file from a working copy of XP, and transfered it to the other.
I can now log in. My new question is, do I need the wsaupdater.exe? If you
recall, you were told to copy the userinit.exe file to that one. What purpose
does this serve?

Thanks,

Swaff -)

Swaff,

You don't need wsaupdater.exe. wsaupdater.exe is a malware and it replaces
the Userinit registry value (if your system was affected by malware
BlazeFind). Some malware removal utilities remove wsaupdater.exe from the
system but they do NOT fix the incorrect Userinit registry value. So, the
usual remedy is to make a new wsaupdater.exe which is a copy of
userinit.exe. Userinit.exe is the vital Windows file which starts the Shell
(Explorer.exe).
