Windows XP Installation Stops with 34 minutes remaining

I am attempting to perform a "Clean Installation" of Windows XP Home Edition.
It continues to stop with 34 minutes remaining. I have read Article 828267
and removed external hardware, and disabled the serial and parallel port, and
it still hangs up. Being a novice, I do not understand how to view the files
mentioned in the Article, i.e. Setuperr.log. I can press SHIFT+F10 and get
to a a command prompt, but my old DOS command (edit) doesn't work. Can you
please help me? Thank you.

I think you can use the TYPE comand but a better approach, if
your system has a floppy drive, would be to use the COPY
command. For example, from the prompt enter the following:

cd Windows
copy setuperr.log A:\
copy pnplog.txt A:\
copy setupapi.log A:\
copy setupact.log A:\

You can now use another computer to open these files in
Notepad.

Good luck

On MS site there's a XP hardware check utility - or such name - that can
check if your hardware is compatible w/ XP. I don't know if it's up to date,
but it mght help you find some hardware compatibility.

Thank you for your response. When I attempted to copy pnplog.txt, the
response was "File not Found". In setupapi.log, it appears that the timeout
occured at the following step:

The pnplog.txt is not always created. That may be a good thing.

Now for the bad news. I don't think those lines from
your setupapi.log are related to your problem. I say that
because I have the same lines near the beginning of the
setupapi.log on my XP Professional system and that installation
went fine. I think you're going to have to look elsewhere for
the source of your problem.

Let's start with some basic info:
1. What kind of system do you have? Brand name and model #?
2. If it's not a brand name PC, what are the hardware specs?
RAM, CPU, Hard drive, Motherboard, etc.?
3. Has XP ever been installed on this computer? Was there an
earlier version of Windows installed on this PC? If there was
an earlier version installed, did you run the Windows Upgrade
Advisor to identify any hardware or software issues that needed
to be addressed?
4. What type of XP installation CD do you have, Retail (you
bought it in a store) or OEM (it came with your computer). If
it's a retail CD, you can contact Microsoft for unlimited free
phone support with installation issues. Take a look here for
more info:

http://www.support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?ln=en-us&x=14&y=8&c1=509&prid=3518&gprid=185522

With regard to the files you copied:
1. Were those the last lines in your setupapi.log file? If not
copy and paste the last 15 lines from setupapi.log into your
response.
2. Are there any entries in setuperr.log? How about
setupact.log?

As for the procedure you're using to install XP, I'm guessing
that your booting from the CD to begin the installation. When
the installation hangs and you have to restart your computer,
are you starting the process from the beginning (hitting any
key to boot from the CD)? If so, don't hit a key so that the
installation picks up from where it hung. Windows is supposed
to skip over any problem hardware that it finds from the
previous installation attempt. Putting it another way, if you
follow the "Press any key to boot from the CD" instructions,
setup will start all over again copying files and you'll never
give Windows a chance to skip problem devices.

Get back to me with answers to these questions.

Thank you for your response.

1. The system is a Quantex Model #TS30T
2. It has 640 KB System Memory with 261120 KB Extended Memory, Pentium III
500 MZ Processor, 12 GB hard drive.
3. It came with Windows 98 SE and this is the first upgrade I have
attempted. I attempted to run Upgrade Advisor but apparently made the wrong
selection because it automatically installed some files without telling me
what they were.
4. I purchased the CD in a Retail store and installed it on another
computer. I plan to purchase an additional license as soon as I get it
installed (if ever).
5. Those were the last 15 lines of the setupapi.log
6. The failure of the setupact.log began with:

The system cannot find the file specified.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\openhci.sys was not deleted because of the following
error:

I do not press "Hit any key to boot from the CD". I let the installation
pick up from where it stopped, hoping it will correct itself, but it has
started many, many times and it stops at the same point each time.

FYI - I once had a USB hub attached to this PC, but took it off prior to
beginning this installation.

I know this is a lot to ask of you, but I am getting ready to go on vacation
and I had hoped to take this with me. Can I reformat the hard drive and
return to Windows 98? I may decide to purchase a new notebook computer while
I'm gone.

Option #1. Make sure your XP installation disk is clean and
does not have any smudges or scratches. Reboot your computer
and this time hit a key to boot from the CD. You want to format
the partition and start the installation from scratch. The
reason I suggest this is because of this line in your
setupact.log file: "One of the components that Windows needs to
continue setup could not be installed". This usually happens
with a bad CD or CD drive. If you need to obtain a replacement
CD, take a look here:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;326246

Option #2. As long as you have a Windows 98SE installation
disk, you might want to go ahead and put Win98 back on your
laptop and go on vacation. When you get back, run the Upgrade
Advisor either from the CD or download it from this location:

http://download.microsoft.com/download/whistler/Utility/1.0/WXP/EN-US/UpgAdv.exe

If it was up to me, I'd go with #2. The fact that Quantex is no
longer in business may make upgrading to XP difficult if not
impossible. Even if you get XP installed you may find that not
all of your hardware will work properly. Usually, a visit to
the manufacturer's web site will solve this problem by letting
you download updated drivers. In your case, you'll have to
figure out who manufactured the component and obtain the update
from them.

Another issue to consider is that even if you were able to
install XP on your system, you're going to see slow
performance. 256 MB's of RAM and a 500 MHZ CPU are enough to
run Windows but as soon as you start several apps the machine
will slow down significantly. You could spend $200 on more
memory and another copy of XP. That's money that might be
better off spent on a new laptop.

Enjoy your vaction

I do not press "Hit any key to boot from the CD". I let the
installation pick up from where it stopped, hoping it will
correct itself, but it has started many, many times and it
stops at the same point each time.

FYI - I once had a USB hub attached to this PC, but took it
off prior to beginning this installation.

I know this is a lot to ask of you, but I am getting ready
to go on vacation and I had hoped to take this with me. Can
I reformat the hard drive and return to Windows 98? I may
decide to purchase a new notebook computer while I'm gone.

The pnplog.txt is not always created. That may be a good
thing.

Now for the bad news. I don't think those lines from
your setupapi.log are related to your problem. I say that
because I have the same lines near the beginning of the
setupapi.log on my XP Professional system and that
installation went fine. I think you're going to have to
look elsewhere for the source of your problem.

If there
was an earlier version installed, did you run the Windows
Upgrade Advisor to identify any hardware or software issues
that needed to be addressed?
4. What type of XP installation CD do you have, Retail (you
bought it in a store) or OEM (it came with your computer).
If it's a retail CD, you can contact Microsoft for
unlimited free phone support with installation issues. Take
a look here for more info:

http://www.support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?ln=en-us&x=14&y=8&c1=509&prid=3518&gprid=185522

With regard to the files you copied:
1. Were those the last lines in your setupapi.log file? If
not copy and paste the last 15 lines from setupapi.log into
your response.
2. Are there any entries in setuperr.log? How about
setupact.log?

As for the procedure you're using to install XP, I'm
guessing that your booting from the CD to begin the
installation. When the installation hangs and you have to
restart your computer, are you starting the process from
the beginning (hitting any key to boot from the CD)? If so,
don't hit a key so that the installation picks up from
where it hung. Windows is supposed to skip over any problem
hardware that it finds from the previous installation
attempt. Putting it another way, if you follow the "Press
any key to boot from the CD" instructions, setup will start
all over again copying files and you'll never give Windows
a chance to skip problem devices.

Get back to me with answers to these questions.

Thank you for your response. When I attempted to copy
pnplog.txt, the response was "File not Found". In
setupapi.log, it appears that the timeout occured at the
following step: [2005/07/16 01:16:40 260.1]
#-199 Executing "C:\WINDOWS\system32\setup.exe" with
command line: setup -newsetup
#-290 Processing REGISTERDLLS section [CryptoDlls]. Binary:
"%11%\rsaenh.dll", flags: 0x0001, timeout: 60s.
#W374 Digital signature verification was skipped for a file
being registered ("C:\WINDOWS\system32\rsaenh.dll").
#-290 Processing REGISTERDLLS section [CryptoDlls]. Binary:
"%11%\dssenh.dll", flags: 0x0001, timeout: 60s.
#W374 Digital signature verification was skipped for a file
being registered ("C:\WINDOWS\system32\dssenh.dll").
#-290 Processing REGISTERDLLS section [CryptoDlls]. Binary:
"%11%\initpki.dll", flags: 0x0001, timeout: 600s.
#W374 Digital signature verification was skipped for a file
being registered ("C:\WINDOWS\system32\initpki.dll").

I tried three times and the result is the same each time.
I would appreciate any advice you may be able to give me.
Thank you.

I am attempting to perform a "Clean Installation" of
Windows XP Home Edition. It continues to stop with 34
minutes remaining. I have read Article 828267 and
removed external hardware, and disabled the serial and
parallel port, and it still hangs up. Being a novice, I
do not understand how to view the files mentioned in the
Article, i.e. Setuperr.log. I can press SHIFT+F10 and
get to a a command prompt, but my old DOS command (edit)
doesn't work. Can you please help me? Thank you.

I think you can use the TYPE comand but a better approach,
if your system has a floppy drive, would be to use the
COPY command. For example, from the prompt enter the
following:

cd Windows
copy setuperr.log A:\
copy pnplog.txt A:\
copy setupapi.log A:\
copy setupact.log A:\

You can now use another computer to open these files in
Notepad.

Good luck

You problem is not entirely clear to me (since I am a novice, too,) but check
this website and see if it helps:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;281653

I installed XP today and it kept stopping at 13 minutes to go, while
"registering components." I could not understand the workaround they
suggest, but the explanation seemed to imply that it wasn't actually not
responding, it only appeared that way (that is, sitting for an hour or more
without appearing to progress.) So, I let it sit for perhaps 2 hours, and it
finally finished!

Sorry if this has absolutely nothing to do with your problem!
