Repair install stops at ETA 34 minutes

My WinXP was behaving strange so I decides to do a repair install. It used to
work most of the times, but now the installer stops at ETA 34 minutes. It
does not freeze, bt stops doing anything. Logs contain rather meaningless
information:
Setup encountered an error while trying to set system security. An extended
error has occured. I tried unplugging unnecessary devices, disabling
unnecessary controllers in BIOS and even uninstalling some programs
(Shift-F10, appwiz.cpl), but it has not changed anything.
Clean install is not an option (at least for now). I'd be grateful for some
information what to do, or where to look for reasons why setup does not work.
I tried two different discs, one from MSDNAA and the other form a box
version. Is it possible to make setup post some meaningful output? Greets.

Thanks, I'll try these. I did not write this before, but both discs i tried
include SP2.

Well, there is no Pnplog.txt file. And I addume that the USB hotfix is
inculded in SP2, as it is dated for 2002. As for the logs, the entry that
seems most suspicious to me is as follows (sorry for Polis language). Any
ideas what could that be?

The other suspicious fragment is the end of setupact.log:

Copied file J:\I386\netfx.ca_ to I:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache\netfx.cat.
External program RUNDLL32 shell32,Control_RunDLL
intl.cpl,,/f:"I:\WINDOWS\system32\$winnt$.inf" /s:"J:\I386" returned error
code 0.
NetSetup: SetupMode: 0x1, ProductType: 0x0, OperationFlags: 0x8004
Setup encountered an error while trying to set system security.

An external error has occured.

I digged up a log from a successful install, and that fragment looks a bit
different:

Copied file I:\I386\netfx.ca_ to D:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache\netfx.cat.
Copied file D:\WINDOWS\Driver Cache\i386\sp2.cab to
D:\WINDOWS\system32\storprop.dll.
Copied file I:\i386\NOTEPAD.EX_ to D:\WINDOWS\NOTEPAD.EXE.

So now the task is to identify what error code 0 means and what that command
was supposed to do.

You seem to have many devices, ie logs show J:\ and I:\, so maybe a hardware
problem.
Try disconnecting all extra hardware, ie use a single hd,
cd,monitor,keybd,mouse, ram stick

I can try, but have already tried removing all PCI cards, disabling onboard
pheripherials (even USB controller, I had to use only the keyboard). As for
disks, system is installed on one HD but is booting from the other, so both
have to be present. I can try removing one of the optical drives, though. The
high letter is a result od a big number of partitions.

Another thing came to my mind. If there are some devices that are plugged in
occasiaonally, say mobile phone, the drivers are present in the system, but
device is not visible in Device Manager (is this the way devmgmt.msc it is
called in English?). Is there any way to make them visible, so that drivers
can be easiry removed? And do such drivers they have any influence at all?
