Windows XP Home, System Running Very Slow

Hi there, I have just recently purchased a brand new pc, its an Intel Celeron
D Processor 320, 256MB DDR RAM, 80GB 7200 RPM ATA-100 Drive and I'm connected
to the internet with Supanet (on broadband). While i was on Supanet on just
the dial up 56k connection everything was fine, the PC was working great and
the internet to. But then when I was had adsl activated on my BT line and
then installed my new adsl modem for broadband, everything went down hill and
now well u cant spend more than a few minutes on the pc without having to
turn it off. As soon as you turn the PC on it takes 3-5 minutes to complete
its boot sequence and load up the desktop. Then when connected to the
internet the homepage takes over 5 mins to load up and if you try and do
anything else, lol well its pointless. I've used "msconfig" to stop unwanted
programs starting up when booting the PC up but they retick themselves when
PC is restarted. Also I've noticed when looking through the processes in the
task manager, there is a lot there that shouldn't be there also they are not
mention in msconfig under the startup tab. Any advice on how to go about
sorting this out would be very much appreciated. Also when I first connect to
the internet after PC has booted up I get around 5-10 pop ups which are
mostly blank come up, I added them to the restricted sites part in the
internet explorer settings, also tried adding them to a pop up blocker but
that still wudnt shut them down. Any help will be great, many thanks, Lee

1. Do you have proper recent virus software loaded and running.

If not its essential on Broadband - i use Norton !!

Check system for virus

2 You do not say how you are connected to broadband - is it a single
computer usb modem or via a router on a network

Slow starting can often be due to wrong network connections configuration
and its basically trying to connect to something thats not there.

3 Do you have broadband filters on ALL your phones. disconnect all phones
in the house and try again.

More detail and I will guess some more!
