Windows XP Explorer hangs whenever CD/DVDs are loaded

Windows XP SP2 (up-tp-date)
NEC DV-5700A dvd rom player

Hi All,

Whenever I load a CD or DVD into the above player, my Windows Explorer
hangs. The only thing that unhangs it is taking out the cd/dvd that can't be
read. I've tried:
::uninstalling and reinstalling the device drivers,
::physically removing the player and reinstalling it
::praying

Nothing has worked.

I don't seem to be able to do a firmware upgrade either because it
apparently requires booting from a floppy drive and this system doesn't have
one (I think I saw one in an antique store the other day, though).

The system detects the drive fine (it shows up in the BIOS, appears as
working properly in the device manager, starts to spin when a disc id put in,
responds to the "eject" command. It just won't read what's on the disc.

I put this cd/dvd rom in as a temporary measure to allow me to install the
OS, and it worked brilliantly for a few days. Then I installed "Sonic MyDVD"
which is probably not designed for cd drives that don't burn. This includes a
thing called Sonic DLA which allows you to "drag-and-drop" onto the drive
icon, and then only burn at a later point when you're ready (I was
pre-empting the arrival of an actual burner obviously). That SEEMS to be when
things went pear-shaped, but who really knows. I've since uninstalled the
Sonic software, to no avail.

Have I permanently damaged by cd drive? Any suggestions on what to try next?

Cheers

A couple of quick and easy things to try:

1. Try using System Restore to go back to a previous restore point.

2. Try using the Last Known Good Configuration.

I can't see how Sonic RecordNow could permanently damage your drive, however
it could be coincidence that your drive has packed up at roughly the same
time as you installed the software. Do you have another drive you could slot
in and try?
