Windows XP Home Edition SP3 DVD drive problem handling DVDs but works with CDs

Steve Rosen

In windows xp sp3 machine, dvd combo drive plays music CD's, handles data
CD's, but has no response to DVD movie disks. I loaded codec pack and a DVD
player, in case that would make a difference. It did not. I have not yet
tried a data DVD.

In case it is relevant, a second drive is pure CD drive, and it currently
does not recognize CD's at all (but I'm not sure I've tried that drive in a
long time, so the problem may be unrelated.

Any suggestions?

I should add to post that the drive does show up as a DVD-RW drive in the
device manager, and that I tried deleting the drive and letting the system
reinstall it, with no change in the symptoms.

Replace the drive with a known-working one. If all is well, discard the
original drive, which has failed.

If you can not "list" the file on any DVD drive or the unit gives
"Please insert disk..." type of message, the drive's internal DVD
"laser" has failed. DVD drives appear to have two different "lasers,"
one to handled CDs and the second one for DVDs.
