DVD-rw displays as CD in Explorer...can't burn CDs

I have a brand new Dell 5100 with Philips DVD -rw 8701. I had no problems
burning DVDs until a week ago. Looking at some of the posts I now think the
problem may have started with a Windows update.

When I put in a DVD-rw it shows up as a CD Rom in Windows explorer. The
problem started with both the DVD and DVD-rw not showing up in explorer at
all. I deleted the upper and lower filters and that problem was fixed. When
I remove a disk it shows up as a DVD-rw in explorer. When I put it back in
it shows up as a CD Drive.

I cannot write DVDs from explorer or Sonic. I cannot even read DVD-rw data
that I previously recorded on this drive. I contacted Dell support and they
replaced the physical drive. That did not fix it. I tried a number of other
things including uninstalling the driver, updating the version of Sonic,
resintalling device from device manger, and resintalling the IDE channel. I
have been reading hundreds of similar posts but I have not found the one that
helps. My latest try has been to uninstall all Sonic software...nothin.

Ok, try this, download cdgone.zip and backup your registry to be safe (read
the readme file) and merge the cdgone.reg (right click, merge) file to the
registry and reboot the computer. This should clear up the problem, though
you will also have to reinstall any third party cd/dvd related burning apps
etc.. if they are required or needed, it's your choice..

Read up here..

Updating the CD/DVD drive's firmware or upgrading your bunning app may be
needed if all else fails...

Thanks for the post, Jaymon. The cdgone.zip did not work. At this point, I
do not have any burning software to test because Sonic MyDVD trial version is
a mess on my machine and nero does not currently offer a trail version.
Perhaps I will just bite the bullet and pay for nero.

The DVD-rw still changes to "CD drive" when I put a DVD-rw in it. I cannot
reference the drive in DOS (e:\).

Where might I find a firmware update for a Philips DVD8701? I have been
unsuccessful in finding it.

So far a search for the Philips DVD8701 on the Philips global site is not
finding any data or downloads.. I wonder if you have id'ed the drive model #
properly? Use the Nero Info Tool to ID the firmware ver# and exact ID string
for the drive in question and post your findings. I will continue to search
and see come what may..

Go here and get the tool and post the id string for the drive and the
firmware ver..

Go here for Nero trialware, see if you like..

Evidently the Philips DVD8701 is or was in a Dell computer and you might
contact Dell customer support for the firmware update to be safe.. I also
include a link to the Philips site for you to browse over and a forum at
lowyat.net where there seems to be a direct link (in one of the posts) to the
firmware update you need, your call...

Thanks, Jaymon. Yes you are correct it is a Philips in a new 5100 Dell
computer. The nero trial version is unavailable so I might just pay for a
version.

I am started to think the problem is with Sonic DLA and or Sonic MyDVD. I
have had blue screen errors while working in MyDVD. Specifically the preview
feature. It is quite possible that this has not worked since that time.

I read somewhere that once a drive has a problem it modifies the DMA such
that it cannot be modified again without physically uninstalling the thing.
When the article started talking about the mother board I gave up. Any
thoughts on this and the possibiity of Sonic being the root of all my
problems? Should I uninstall everything Sonic before installing Nero?

Sorry for not responding sooner, had a pinched phone line. It caused a super
slow connection and I was unable to post, just today I noticed the table leg
on the cable, problem solved...

I found a mirror site for the Nero demo that you may have missed see the new
link..
http://www.nero.com/en/mirror.php

It might be a good idea to uninstall the Sonic software to make way for
Nero, to play it safe..
You can always reinstall the Sonic software later on down the road if you
need to at all..
Have you updated the Sonic software? It may need to be updated and might
work better after..?

Jaymon. Thanks again for your help.

Ultimately the problem wa Sonic. I was getting nasty blue screens with a
demo version of the latest upgrade. I purchased Nero and all is well. I
have been creating DVD's all weekend. I uninstalled most of Sonic and
replaced Sonic DLA with InCD. Whewww!

Thanks again
