burning cds and dvds

I have seen earlier postings on this subject on this newsgroup and there
appear to be very narrow specifications for the co-existence of different
packages for burning and the type and brand of media used for burning. But I
also find that Sonic's MyDVD 5 which came along with my Sony DVD Writer
(this software has no provision for burning a CD) does not tolerate Nero's
CD burning software and right at the time of installing MyDVD, demands
removing the Nero's CD burning software, leaving NeroVision Express 3 meant
for burning VCDs and DVDs in tact. I have an additional Samsung CD/DVD combo
drive but I cannot use that too for burning a CD because of MyDVD's dislike
for CD burning software.
Could any experienced correspondent to this Newsgroup (or Sonic or Nero
themselves) advise me on the packages for burning CD and DVD which can
co-exist under XP on the same computer?

Not sure why you need Sonic. Nero Burning Rom, 5.5 and higher will burn
DVDs. Video DVDs usually have a built-in DVD playing software installation
option that's free.

Look at CDBurnerXP Pro (http://www.cdburnerxp.se/) it is free and burns
cds and DVDs (not dual layer ones yet).

I have tried several times after reading your response but the download does
not start at all. You have any idea if I have to go to another web-page
which lists the locations for downloading? Does the inclusion of the word
Pro in the name of the software indicate that it is only for XP Pro users? I
am asking because I am a Home Edition user.

The download works for me from either cdburnerxp.se or the Major Geeks
sites.
I do not know what the Pro signifies but the program works for Win98,
XP Pro and XP Home.

Firmware updates for the burners can sometimes solve media issues.

I would also recomend disabling any items in your startup group that are
related to the two software packages. This may be whats keeping you from
using them both. Its worth a try anyway. These items are used to drag and
drop from windows explorer rather then using the programs themselves. If you
have two running they may be confusing one another.

Also if you havent already disable the XP buring capability. Since XP has
its own built in it sometimes causes issues. If you art sure how then just
right click on start and select "explore", then right click on your cd rom
drive and select "explore" again, then click on the "recording" tab. Last of
all uncheck "enable cd recording on this drive".
